nLIGHT Introduces New Non-Circular Optical Fiber Geometries
Vancouver, WA USA June 28, 2010
nLIGHT Corporation (nLIGHT) expands its passive optical fiber product portfolio with the addition of new fibers with non-circular geometries and aspect ratios.
Rectangular fiber geometries offer an effective way to couple laser diode energy to a passive fiber with high brightness and efficiency since the contact area of the laser diode and the fiber can be optimized to match one another. These fibers can also be used to efficiently couple optical energy to slab and planar structures.
Two broad product variations are now available. In Figure 1, a fiber with a rectangular-core and a round-cladding is shown. It has a round 250µm cladding and rectangular-core with a numerical-aperture (NA) of 0.11 and aspect ratio of 10:1 (width:height). In Figure 2, fibers with a rectangular-core and cladding are shown. These cores are either 22µm x 155µm or 22µm x 110µm and have an NA of 0.11. Custom fibers with different geometries, core NAs, and coatings (high NA, low NA) are also possible.
