Job Summary: 

nLIGHT is seeking an experienced Opto-Mechanical Engineer.  This position resides within Diode Laser Component team which develops high power semiconductor laser packages.  The successful candidate will be responsible for all aspects of the optical and opto-mechanical design of high brightness diode laser pakcages, from concept, into product development and into volume manufacturing.    

Responsibilities Include:

  • Optical design and tolerance of analysis of fiber coupled lensed diode laser packages using ZEMAX and other tools
  • Develop robust opto-mechanical solutions in free space and fiber coupled lens trains
  • Integration of mechanical and optical designs while applying robust and cost effective design techniques for reliable operation in rugged conditions including temperature extremes, shock and vibration.
  • Ownership of design from concept to volume manufacturing, including coordinating design, process, test, manufacturing, and quality functions.
  • Become a key technical resource for in-house customers including purchasing, manufacturing, and development.
  • Perform hands-on prototyping of assemblies in clean room labs of high brightness diode laser products and associated assembly processes.
  • Navigate trade space of new designs between performance, reliability, cost, and manufacturability using DFM techniques.
  • Provide clear and concise documentation of designs, processes, procedures and equipment.


  • B.S. (5 years’ experience) or M.S. (3 years’ experience) in Optical Engineering, Physics, or Materials Science Engineering
  • Minimum of 3 years optical-mechanical design experience, with relevant experience in fiber coupled high power lasers preferred.
  • Proficiency with ZEMAX is required.
  • Demonstrated experience taking optical based products from concept into production using DFM and DFSS techniques. This includes ownership through prototype, alpha product builds, qualification testing, and into production. 
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced, multi-tasking environment and interface with multiple disciplines across the organization.
  • Ability to effectively prioritize tasks, manage time wisely and meet critical deadlines. 
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills with the ability to effectively communicate and interact with all levels of personnel within the organization, including presenting information.
  • Ability to work with peers, customers and vendors in a constructive and professional manner.
  • Demonstrated analytical and problem-solving skills including problem identification, analysis, action planning and execution.
