Supplier Quality Engineer

This newly created position recognizes the increasingly important role nLIGHT’s suppliers play in our success. We are looking for someone who has demonstrated success working with multiple suppliers in a win-win approach. Ultimately, the successful candidate will be responsible for ensuring that nLIGHT’s Preferred Suppliers eliminate escaping defects, while simultaneously setting these suppliers up for success by involving them in early discussions about new part requirements.


  • Supplier Quality
    • Lead nLIGHT’s Zero Escaping Defect (ZED) Program, developing suppliers performance in support of a dock-to-stock philosophy
    • Work closely with nLIGHT Development Engineers to ensure part designs are within suppliers’ capabilities and leverage their strengths
    • Drive timely and complete resolution of significant supplier quality excursions, identifying ‘how caused’ and ‘how escaped’ in reactive Supplier Improvement Plans
    • Ensure accurate supplier quality data collection, analysis and reporting. Use these to identify improvement opportunities and drive proactive Supplier Improvement Plans
    • Audit suppliers as required – new supplier assessment and periodic assessment of existing suppliers
    • Provide data-driven input to the selection of Preferred Suppliers
    • Identify and implement mitigation plans for suppliers who would not normally be ‘approved’ but who are the only viable source for a particular part
    • Facilitate Shanghai Quality and SCM Teams’ management of the Zero Escaping Defects (ZED) Program with Asian suppliers
  • Quality Management System
    • Ensure that the Quality Management System provides the best opportunities for both nLIGHT and suppliers to be successful
    • Ensure prompt and complete responses by suppliers to NCM issues that result in RTV disposition
    • Ensure nLIGHT Business Systems provide complete, accurate, and timely information to suppliers

Required Experience: 

Candidates should have a minimum of 5 years working in Quality Engineering, preferably Supplier Quality Engineering.


Candidates should have a proven track record of developing suppliers’ quality performance including integrating suppliers into the product development process.

Required Skills: 

Analytical skills, project management, use of statistical software, communication skills, strong interpersonal skills


Required: Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering, Science or Math/Statistics

Preferred: Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering, Science or Math/Statistics, ASQ Certified Quality Engineer, ASQ Certified Six Sigma Black Belt



The successful candidate can work out of either our Vancouver, WA or Hillsboro, OR offices. However time allocation will likely be:

30% spent face-to-face with Development Engineers and other functions in Vancouver

30% spent at suppliers sites

Travel will include overnight stays, and occasional overseas destinations.
