Senior Firmware Engineer


The Product Software Development team at nLIGHT is charged with delivering world class software and firmware for our rapidly growing laser products business.  The ideal candidate is highly motivated with an excellent track record of performance and creativity in software and embedded development.  They will contribute to the architecture, design, development, testing, and delivery of our laser products and supporting infrastructure.  They would join a small team with a considerable influence and would require good teamwork in a dynamic environment.


  • Interface with colleagues, partners and customers to understand and manage feature requirements, expectations, and priorities
  • Define design and architecture to create extensible and maintainable systems that fulfill product feature requirements
  • Develop robust middleware, embedded and FPGA code used in demanding 24x7 production environments worldwide
  • Use good software engineering and development processes and practices to produce and maintain high quality software
  • Document appropriately and advocate for best practices
  • Assist and support customers with software and system issues


  • 10-15 years in Electrical or Computer Engineering, or Computer Science
  • Experience with Embedded communications
  • Experience with Embedded Systems development with ARM-based processors
  • Experience with FPGA development
  • Experience with real-time systems a plus
  • Experience with Windows or Linux application development a plus
  • Comfortable with C or C++
  • Electronics knowledge a plus – read schematics and wiring diagrams; use multi-meters, oscilloscopes, and function generators
  • Familiar with software engineering and development process
  • Excellent troubleshooting skills
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills
  • Strong in OOA and OOD
  • Ability to work well in a dynamic and fast paced environment
  • Attention to detail and an ability to absorb and assimilate information rapidly
  • Skilled with Microsoft SW: Excel, Word, PowerPoint, etc.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Comfortable with Windows and Linux development environments
  • Comfortable with ARM architecture and system configuration
  • Comfortable with ARM toolchains (Keil, IAR)
  • Knowledge of scripting with Python
  • Computer Skills – git or other SW configuration management systems
  • Exposure to Verilog, FPGAs, and their development tools
