New Product Introduction Program Manager

The primary function of this position is to manage the product lifecycle, from inception through the transition from engineering to volume manufacturing.  The intent of this role is to focus on products and technologies related to lasers used in industrial applications.  nLIGHT uses a phased-gate New Product Introduction (NPI) process as a lifecycle management tool.


  • Lead cross-functional teams (including but not limited to product development, purchasing, sourcing, planning, quality, compliance, test, marketing, facilities, and manufacturing) through the NPI process.
  • Develop and manage program plans (resource allocation, schedule, budget, and performance attributes); provide regular written and verbal reports to peers and executives.
  • Provide program inputs to the business unit and corporate planning processes in support of quarterly and annual planning cycles.
  • Implement appropriate business and operations systems in support of product development needs.
  • Drive structured continuous improvement efforts.
  • Escalate issues and drive resolution, as required, to balance program risk as it relates to cost/schedule/performance attributes.
  • Coordinate with Product Line Management and Sales/Marketing in satisfying the schedule and performance/configuration/compliance requirements of initial customers.

 Success Criteria

  • Employees performing in this capacity are measured primarily on their ability to meet their cost, schedule, and performance commitments for a given deliverable.   


  • 10+ years of product development, transfer to production, product line management, and/or manufacturing management experience in global high tech industries.
  • Experience with capital equipment development, and in particular, laser-related products or equipment, is preferred.
  • Bachelor’s degree in physics, engineering, or similar discipline.
  • Demonstrated mastery of manufacturing systems and management controls (ERP/MRP, PDM, lean, six sigma, SPC, as examples).
